MY CALL: Despite being a practically witchless witch movie with clunky storytelling, much of Argento’s unique style reserves a place in the halls of classic horror film appreciation. As far as “witch movies” go, I’d consider this the weakest of his Three Mothers trilogy. MOVIES LIKE Suspiria: Well, there’s the original Suspiria (1977) and its […]
Teeny thought it was just another routine babysitting job—until she’s shocked to meet the client. As the day goes on, Teeny decides to become the woman she had no idea she always wanted to be … until she gets caught.
An irreverent and comedic alt-history of the Lazy Susan (that spinning thing on the table at Chinese restaurants), and how one lazy lazy woman changed the restaurant industry forever. Susan’s family restaurant is in trouble: a competing restaurant, Soup Station, moves in next door and, powered by its ingenious innovation (self-serve soup!) business is slow. How can their traditional Chinese restaurant compete? From this humble beginning, the legend of Susan is born.
Its taken a while to wrap up the Festival du Nouveau Cinema coverage but we’re in the final double feature. Both a romance in their own regards is a Canadian film, Sin La Habana and a French movie, Poissonsexe. Both having a romance wrapped up in highlighting a bigger plot and both carrying a different […]
I’m not sure what any of us expected from Hillbilly Elegy, but if it was a good film, it seems to have been something of a tall order, and one that simply could not be met in any conceivable way by a film that seems, more than anything else, entirely unnecessary to begin with. Naturally, […]

When composing the canon of great American films, there is one in particular that occupies a very strange space – Elmer Gantry is a film mostly remembered for the dynamic performance given by Burt Lancaster, who was already one of the industry’s most interesting leading actors, and very little else. Richard Brooks was a filmmaker […]

On a cold winter night, Lynn just wants a one-night stand. As she kisses the slightly dorky guy outside a club in Toronto, she thinks she’s found it. But he lives two hours away via public transit, which makes her “no strings attached” encounter suddenly complicated. As the couple get on the subway and then on a bus, what starts out as excitement gets awkward fast. But as things get real, what begins as a fleeting encounter becomes much more interesting. This sweet, winning romantic comedy is carried by its excellent script, as well as earnest, relatable performances by its lead actors. Captured with excellent camerawork and scored with dreamy indie rock, “Long Branch” captures what it’s like to be young, dealing with less than ideal adult lives and falling in love when you least expect it. The journey to a delicate, budding new relationship is filled with its obstacles and rocky moments, but by the film’s end, you’ll want to keep following this pair into the future.
